London stay on top, Leicester and Sheffield keep the pressure on, in exciting week of Championship action

Surrey and Newcastle enjoyed mixed fortunes, in a busy week which saw Manchester earn a much-needed victory.

London Lions 78 – 73 Manchester Basketball

League-leading Lions tipped off this week’s Championship action, when they welcomed mid-table Manchester to the Copper Box Arena on Wednesday evening.

The game began with London’s Alen Hadzibegovic making an immediate impact. He opened the scoring for the hosts, setting the tone for what would become a standout individual performance. However, Manchester quickly responded with a lay-up from Elijah Ifejeh and a deep three-pointer from Makai Ashton-Langford, taking a brief lead.

Hadzibegovic continued his offensive onslaught, combining with Aaryn Rai for a pair of quick baskets in the paint to restore London’s advantage. Despite strong resistance from Manchester’s Zak Irvin and Marcus Delpeche, the Lions continued to build their lead. Rai found his rhythm at the free-throw line, stretching the margin into double digits as the first quarter came to a close. At the end of the opening period, London held an eight-point advantage.

Manchester knew they needed to respond strongly in the second quarter, and they did just that. After Tanner Stuckman opened the bench scoring for London, Manchester went on a scorching 15-0 run, taking control of the game. Ashton-Langford continued to impress with crafty lay-ups, while Mitchell hit a pair of three-pointers. Nathan Cayo and Cody John contributed off the bench, pushing Manchester into a seven-point lead.

London was momentarily stunned, but Hadzibegovic again became the catalyst for his team’s offence, leading a mini-revival toward the end of the period. However, it was too late to halt the momentum completely, and by halftime, Manchester had turned the tables, heading into the locker room with an eight-point lead.

Coming out of halftime, the Lions were determined to recover. They came out strong with a 7-0 run, led by Michael Brisker, who hit key shots to narrow the deficit. Jaiden Delaire added a pair of buckets, further closing the gap as the Lions found their rhythm once again.

Manchester, however, continued to fight, with contributions from Cayo and Ifejeh. But it was Hadzibegovic who again found a way to put his team in front, absorbing contact and calmly sinking two free throws to reclaim the lead for London.

Mitchell responded with a dunk to briefly put Manchester back ahead, but the Lions quickly answered with Brisker, followed by Stuckman and Tyler Peterson, who kept the pressure on. By the end of the third quarter, London had regained the advantage.

The final quarter saw London attempt to seal their victory, and it didn’t take long for them to push their lead further. Stuckman opened the scoring with a three-pointer, but Mitchell quickly responded with a strong finish at the rim. Manchester made a late push, as Cody John hit a hook shot followed by a contested three-pointer, bringing the deficit down to just three points.

Despite the close margin, London’s experienced scorers—Hadzibegovic and Rai—led their team’s offensive charge, driving to the basket with intensity to protect the lead. As the clock wound down, Brisker and Ciaran Sandy added critical baskets, while Manchester struggled to overcome London’s now fully-flowing offence.

In the end, despite committing 11 more turnovers than their opponents, London’s superior rebounding—outrebounding Manchester by 19—proved to be a decisive factor in the game.

The victory catapulted London further ahead at the top of the league table, with a four-point lead over second-placed Sheffield and a six-point reign over third-placed Leicester, albeit having played two and three more games, respectively.

Most Valuable Player: Alen Hadzibegovic played the starring role for London, adding 11 boards and three assists to his 19-point scoring performance.

Bristol Flyers 67 – 85 Newcastle Eagles

Down at the SGS College Arena, Newcastle entered the second contest of the week eight points ahead of their hosts, with Bristol looking to close the growing gap between the top four and the chasing pack.

The game opened with a strong start from Bristol, who were not expected to come out on top. Keddy Johnson set the tone early with a confident three-pointer, followed by a turnaround jumper from Demond Robinson to give the Flyers an early lead. The Eagles responded quickly, with Mike Okaura offering resistance by converting a mid-range shot to put the visitors ahead.

Bristol’s Alain Louis delivered an impressive personal run in the first quarter. A heat check saw him make two quick lay-ups and convert from the free-throw line, helping the Flyers regain the lead. Johnson and Jared Sherfield continued to contribute offensively, and Bristol appeared to be building momentum. However, the Eagles weren’t to be outdone. Cole Long came off the bench and completed an ‘and-1’ play, while Seneca Knight calmly converted at the line to bring Newcastle within two points by the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Cole Long carry over the energy he created in the first, knocking down a three-pointer and hitting free throws to give the Eagles a slight edge. With Marc Steutel’s side finding their groove, Darius Defoe and Josh Ward-Hibbert finished easy opportunities to extend the Eagles’ lead.

Every time Bristol threatened to narrow the gap, the Eagles responded. Allen-Eikens hit timely shots, ensuring the Flyers were unable to gain a foothold. At halftime, Newcastle led by just two points, setting the stage for a tight second half.

The third quarter began with Newcastle finding their rhythm. Long hit a contested three-pointer early, pushing the Eagles’ lead further. Bristol fought back with lay-ups from Louis and Robinson, but Okaura took over for the Eagles. His three-pointer followed by three makes from the free-throw line seemed to take the game out of reach for the Flyers.

As the quarter progressed, Bristol struggled offensively, going scoreless for three minutes, which allowed Newcastle to stretch their lead into double digits. However, Bristol showed resilience with a late run, as Louis hit a deep three-pointer and Lewis jammed the ball home, cutting the deficit to just four points heading into the final quarter.

Bristol’s hopes were quickly dashed early in the fourth as Christian James opened the quarter with a six-point burst in a single minute, pushing the Eagles’ lead back into double figures. The Flyers did not give up easily, with Lewis making key shots, but Okaura and James kept responding for Newcastle, maintaining their advantage.

As the quarter wore on, the Eagles’ superior execution proved too much for Bristol. Knight scored crafty lay-ups, Allen-Eikens powered through the lane, and Ward-Hibbert hit a crucial three-pointer to finish the game.

Despite a strong effort from Bristol, Newcastle’s balanced offence and timely plays allowed them to extend their lead and secure a comfortable 18-point victory.

Most Valuable Player: Mike Okauru led scoring for Newcastle with 19, while also logging five boards and three dimes along the way.

Leicester Riders 91 – 81 Surrey 89ers

Also on Friday evening, Leicester welcomed Surrey to the Mattioli Arena. The Riders hoped to close to gap between themselves and second-placed Sheffield, while Surrey simply searched for the sixth win of the season.

Surrey opened strong with an early burst of offence. Mervin James hit a floater, and Nedas Cholevinskas converted a lay-up to give the 89ers an early lead. Leicester quickly responded, with Jaylin Hunter and Riley Abercrombie scoring from close range to tie the game. From there, both teams traded the lead, with Josh Steel and Mervin James briefly putting Surrey ahead before Zach Jackson and Abercrombie answered for Leicester.

Surrey briefly regained the advantage when Cameron Gooden made a difficult lay-up, and veteran Andrew Lawrence extended the lead to five after coming off the bench. However, Leicester weren’t fazed. Hunter drained a three-pointer, and Jackson slammed home a dunk to bring the teams level once again. The game continued to ebb and flow, with both teams exchanging points rapidly. Duke Shelton provided a scoring punch off the bench for Leicester, but Surrey’s Lawrence nailed a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the quarter, giving the 89ers a narrow lead as the period came to an end.

The second quarter began with Surrey continuing to press on. Mervin James attacked the rim, pushing the 89ers ahead by a few points. However, Leicester’s second unit stepped up. Shelton and Ethan Wright found scoring opportunities, helping Leicester reclaim the lead. Surrey fought back through James and Gooden, who both scored from close range to give the 89ers a six-point advantage midway through the quarter.

Leicester responded with poise. Hunter scored back-to-back mid-range jumpers, pulling Leicester back within one point. Later, Charles Thompson tied the game for the Riders at the free-throw line, and Abercrombie added a lay-up in the final seconds of the half. This late run gave Leicester a three-point lead as the teams went into the locker rooms.

Coming out of halftime, Leicester came out strong. Jackson and Hunter carved their way through the lane, pushing the Riders’ lead to seven. Surrey weren’t done, though, and James kept the 89ers in contention with some key baskets. Leicester quickly built a double-digit lead, thanks to two quick scores from Jackson and Johnson. Surrey’s Josh Steel hit a three-pointer, but Abercrombie continued to score steadily, keeping the Riders ahead.

As the quarter neared its end, James and Surrey’s captain Tayo Ogedengbe combined for multiple close looks, going on a 6-0 run to bring Surrey back within three. Lawrence then hit another crucial three-pointer in the final moments of the quarter, tying the game as the teams entered the fourth quarter.

The final period began with Cholevinskas hitting a three for Surrey to briefly give them the lead. However, Leicester quickly responded, working together as a team to move ahead by three. From that point on, the Riders took control of the game. Conner Washington, Jackson, Hunter, and Abercrombie combined for an impressive offensive run, extending Leicester’s lead to 10 points with just over five minutes left in the game.

As the game developed, Leicester tightened their grip, earning multiple trips to the free-throw line and frustrating a now-deflated Surrey side. Despite a late lay-up from James, it was clear that Leicester had done enough to secure the win. The game ended with Leicester earning a 10-point victory, an important result that propelled them into a tie for second place in the Championship standings.

Most Valuable Player: Jaylin Hunter stood out for Leicester, scoring 20 points, grabbing three boards and dishing out seven assists.

Surrey 89ers 79 – 71 Caledonia Gladiators

Just a day after their loss to Leicester, the 89ers welcomed Caledonia to the Surrey Sports Park on Saturday evening. With the Gladiators only logging two wins thus far, Surrey entered as strong favourites, but that’s not how things got started.

Jalen Ray opened the scoring for Surrey with a tough three-pointer. However, it was the Gladiators who made the brighter start, led by Patrick Whelan. Whelan followed up a deep three-pointer with an athletic lay-up, giving Caledonia an early lead. A minute later, Fraser Malcolm drained another triple to extend the Gladiators’ advantage to three. Unfortunately for Caledonia, that would be as good as it got for them as Surrey quickly found their rhythm.

Dame Adelekun was instrumental in Surrey’s turnaround, combining a successful trip to the free-throw line with a mid-range jumper to regain the lead for the 89ers. Surrey then went on a 10-0 run, featuring timely contributions from veterans Andrew Lawrence and Tayo Ogedengbe, who both hit crucial shots. As the first quarter came to a close, Surrey held an eight-point lead, with Caledonia’s efforts to respond falling short.

The second quarter saw a shift for Caledonia as they looked to mount a comeback. The Gladiators found an answer through new signing Albert Ventura. The Spanish guard drained a couple of jump shots, cutting Surrey’s lead to just four points. However, Surrey were quick to respond. Adelekun teamed up with Mervin James, with Adelekun throwing down a dunk and James adding a lay-up to push the lead back to Surrey’s favour.

Surrey then looked to their bench for further scoring support, and Jordan Hunt answered the call. Hunt came through with two key makes in the final minute of the half, ensuring that the 89ers went into the locker rooms with a double-digit lead, giving them a comfortable advantage heading into the second half.

The third quarter began with both teams trading buckets, but Surrey began to build a more significant lead thanks to Cameron Gooden’s scoring contributions. Gooden’s points extended Surrey’s advantage to 16. Caledonia’s Devearl Ramsey responded with a pair of lay-ups, trying to spark a comeback for the visitors.

Another new addition for Caledonia, Jett Speelman, also made an impact. Speelman fought through the Surrey defence for an easy bucket, helping close the gap slightly. Despite their efforts, Surrey couldn’t be stopped. Hunt came up with another key scoring burst, contributing six unanswered points and extending the 89ers’ lead to 19 points. Ventura and Hughes made a couple of late baskets for Caledonia, but Surrey still held a commanding 14-point lead heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter saw Speelman continue to battle for the Gladiators, scoring both inside and out in an attempt to bring his team back into the game. Nedas Cholevinskas, however, wasn’t letting the lead slip away. Following up on his strong performance from the previous night, Cholevinskas made a pair of crucial shots to help tighten Surrey’s grip on the contest.

Adelekun also took charge for Surrey, adding two more lay-ups to maintain the 89ers’ lead. However, Caledonia wasn’t done yet. Ventura completed a three-point play at the line, pulling the Gladiators back to within single digits. Unfortunately for Caledonia, it was too little, too late. Surrey closed the game out with a professional display, forcing the Gladiators to foul and making key free throws to maintain their lead.

As the final buzzer sounded, Surrey had secured an 8-point victory, bouncing back from their previous defeat. It was a complete team effort, with contributions from both the starters and the bench, and Surrey’s ability to close the game out at the free-throw line proved crucial in sealing the win.

Most Valuable Player: Dame Adelekun finished with a 14 & 14 double-double, making a difference on the glass and at the basket.

Manchester Basketball 86 – 79 Newcastle Eagles

Newcastle arrived at the National Basketball Performance Centre on a four-game winning streak. To make it five, they’d need to get through a Manchester team in need of a win, having lost their last six.

The game began with immediate intensity as Donovan Mitchell hit a mid-range jumper to give Manchester an early lead that would not be reversed. Ashton-Langford soon added to the scoring, setting the tone for his remarkable individual performance by making a free throw.

Manchester went on a 10-0 run, keeping Newcastle scoreless for a period. It wasn’t until Christian James came off the bench that Newcastle managed to get on the board. James was instrumental, scoring multiple buckets along with Mike Okauru and Seneca Knight to bring the visitors back into the game. Despite the Eagles’ rally, Ashton-Langford finished the quarter strong, hitting a difficult lay-up to restore Manchester’s five-point lead at the end of the first.

Cheshire Phoenix 90 – 105 London Lions

London arrived at the Cheshire Oaks Arena with a message to send, having watched Sheffield and Leicester keep the pressure on with big wins this week. To reassert the dominance, they’d have to defeat mid-table Cheshire, in the midst of a brutal losing streak.

The game began with Cheshire playing with confidence, despite being clear underdogs. Larry Austin Jr. and Nick Timberlake made key lay-ups to give Cheshire an early 4-0 lead. However, the Lions quickly found their rhythm, with Tyler Peterson and Michael Brisker responding for London.

Skyler White hit a three-pointer to tie the game, followed by a dunk from Cameron Holden and another lay-up from Austin Jr. to give Cheshire the advantage once again. The teams exchanged leads several times in a highly competitive first quarter, but a 6-0 run from London gave them a narrow two-point lead heading into the second period.

The second quarter continued the back-and-forth nature of the game, with Timberlake tying the game early and then putting Cheshire ahead briefly with a free throw. Aaryn Rai executed an ‘and-1’ play to put London back on top, but Cheshire’s Austin Jr. kept the hosts in the game, and the two teams continued to trade baskets, with Bobby Planutis and Cameron Holden responding to every London challenge. However, London managed to maintain a slight edge going into halftime.

The third quarter saw London assert themselves more decisively. They launched a dominant spell, with Rai hitting key free throws, and Tanner Stuckman drained two quick three-pointers to create a nine-point gap.

Cheshire tried to respond, with Austin Jr. and Timberlake making crucial inside shots, but London’s smooth shooting from the charity stripe, particularly from Stuckman and Hadzibegovic, helped them extend the lead to double digits. A 9-0 run by the Lions late in the third quarter further widened the gap, and by the end of the period, Cheshire found themselves trailing by 16 points.

The fourth instalment started with some hot shooting from Skyler White and RJ Eytle-Rock, which brought Cheshire back within 11. Stuckman and Delaire quickly answered for London with lay-ups, pushing the lead back up.

Though Holden tried to keep Cheshire’s hopes alive with another drive to the basket, it was too late. Matthew Goodwin added a lay-up in the final seconds, sealing a 15-point win for London.

Despite their best efforts, Cheshire were unable to overcome London’s offensive firepower in the second half, and the Lions’ strong fourth-quarter performance secured them the victory and a firm position at the top of the league standings.

Most Valuable Player: Tanner Stuckman rose from the bench to score 20 points and pull down in four boards, contributing to a tremendous offensive performance.
