How Super League Basketball Officiating Works
Super League Basketball operates a structured officiating process designed to ensure matches are officiated consistently, professionally and independently.
Who appoints the officials?
Referees are appointed for every SLB match by the league’s Officiating Department.
Table Officials and Statisticians are appointed by the Home Club for each match.
All Match Officials are required to follow SLB’s standards, including requirements around their official matchwear and professional conduct.
How are officials supported and developed?
SLB’s Officiating Department includes a team of qualified and experienced referees who act as independent advisers to the league on matters relating to Match Officials and the rules of basketball.
They are responsible for:
- Working with SLB to create an objective process for recruiting and deploying Referees
- Advising SLB and Referees on officiating standards and the application of the rules.
- Working with stakeholders to provide training and development programmes.
- Reviewing reports on officiating performances and advising SLB on areas for future development.
This provides an independent layer of expertise and oversight around officiating and helps ensure standards continue to develop throughout the season.
Professional standards
Match Officials are required to maintain the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
Any official found to have attempted to influence the outcome of a match through a reward or inducement, or who places a wager on a match, would be subject to disciplinary action for misconduct.
Match Officials also report on matches but do not recommend what disciplinary action should be taken against players, Clubs or other participants. Decisions on discipline are therefore kept separate from the officials responsible for officiating the game.
