A successful inaugural season to date for Super League Basketball (SLB) has been further highlighted by the impressive performances of two franchises on the European stage, as some of Britain’s best ballers compete with heavyweights from the continent.
The Newcastle Eagles and Bristol Flyers have showcased exceptional performances in the 2024/25 European North Basketball League (ENBL). The Eagles are undefeated and topping Group A of the competition with a flawless 5-0 record, and the Flyers have taken on some of the biggest names in European basketball in Group B with distinction.
The ENBL is a prestigious competition featuring top basketball teams from across Northern and Central Europe. Established to enhance international club competition, the ENBL provides a platform for elite talent, fostering intense rivalries and showcasing high-calibre basketball on a continental stage.
The Newcastle Eagles have secured victories against formidable opponents from countries such as Romania, Slovakia and Latvia on their way to a 5-0 record.
These triumphs highlight the Eagles’ competitive edge against top-tier European teams. Head Coach Marc Steutel’s side have become one of the favourites to go all the way and win the competition given their successes, which would make them the first British men’s side to win a major European title.
In Group B, the Bristol Flyers have demonstrated resilience against some of the biggest sides in European basketball, including Denmark’s Bakken Bears, Germany’s Bamberg Baskets, Poland’s Legia Warsaw, and securing a thrilling double-overtime win against Czechia’s Basket Brno.
The successes of both teams against esteemed European clubs reflect the strengthening of the British domestic league and signify a pivotal advancement for British basketball, enhancing its reputation across Europe.
